Dysthymic Disorder is similar to ‘normal’ depression. The main difference is that it’s not as severe. One big difference is that this condition lasts over two years before it’s diagnosed. Low energy levels and changes in sleeping habits are also symptoms. Another is a victim’s general feelings of low self-worth.

These four categories of symptoms are also associated with the disease:

1) Changes in the way people think – Difficulty in focusing on something for long and making decisions. This goes with their tendency to also have short term memory loss.

2) Emotional changes – Many people report feeling depressed about things that they used to love. Once even-tempered persons now become short-tempered and irritable. Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness dominate their emotional being.

3) Turn into a hermit of sorts – Become anti-social, avoiding people that they used to talk with frequently. They may stay indoors and overeat or may not eat enough. Besides losing their sex drive, many people slowly stop taking care of their personal hygiene.

4) Physical changes – Despite spending more hours sleeping, people will be constantly run-down and tired. Most can’t fall asleep and if they do, can’t sleep soundly. Laying awake for hours, when they do fall asleep they’ll wake up throughout the night. A minority of dysthymic disorder afflicted people will sleep many hours – apparently soundly – only to awaken feeling more tired than when they went to sleep.

How To Treat Dysthymic Disorder

It turns out that treatment with standard anti-depression methods work very well for this disease, which should come as no surprise since it IS a form of depression. But most people improve with a combination of psychiatric counseling and prescription medications, which parallels traditional depression treatment methods.

Personality disorders like this are best treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is recognized by the medical societies. CBT is becoming the psychiatric treatment of choice. Since people tend to over-react to problems in their lives, cognitive behavior therapy helps them separate which problems are truly big and which are inconsequential. Problems will definitely come up in everyone’s life; CBT allows a person to recognize if the problem is worth his concern or not.

And lastly, therapy is needed to address the high-stress parts of a person’s life that are contributing to his or her depression. Interpersonal relationship conflicts are treated with interpersonal therapy, while the behavioral therapy addresses a person’s ability to cope with life’s stresses.

When you think of depression, you probably think of the term, “clinical depression.” It is more than just a low mood; it’s actually a pretty serious disease. Major depression disorder is the official medical term for clinical depression. (It’s also known as “major depressive disorder.)

The term ‘clinical depression’ is the more popular term used to describe symptoms of MDD. But MDD is so bad that usually people so affected are totally wiped out by it. There are many symptoms of MDD and they include both physical and emotional symptoms. These can include inability to focus, a lack of self-esteem, fluctuations in weight, lethargy, sleeping all day, loss of sex drive, and sadness. Some people even become suicidal.

Some types of depression such as postpartum depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) are actually forms of major depression disorder. (By the way, sometimes it is referred to as “Major Depressive Disorder.”) People considered to have MDD – regardless of the type of ’sub-category’ depression type – must be a depressed mood for over two weeks and have at least five other classic depression symptoms. So if a patient is experiencing these symptoms, treatment becomes necessary. This is not just a case of “the blues.”

There are many recommended treatments for MDD, but the most common are medication, psychotherapy, and even ECT (Electro-Convulsive-Therapy, a.k.a. “electroconvulsive therapy”).

Some new treatments are starting to be used today, with some people swearing by their effectiveness and others swearing at them. Light therapy, for instance, has proven effective for seasonal affective disorder, whereas it was once considered bogus.

Some natural remedies, though, are clearly NOT so effective. One herbal remedy for depression is St. John’s Wort, but its effectiveness is limited. Another “natural” remedy being experimented with is acupuncture, but so far its effectiveness hasn’t been proven as well.

But don’t wait until things get critical with your friend or loved one (or yourself!). Get some sort of treatment going ASAP. Whether the treatment is ‘official’ established depression treatment or some weird alternative treatment, the important thing is to get something going.

Any possible physical causes for the depression should be examined first. Often the cause is a hard-to-diagnose disease, bad diet, or simply genetic – inherited predisposition to depression.

Then emotional problems should be looked into, and this includes past trauma, bereavement, any suppressed mental struggles and so forth.

So the therapist needs to be a good detective of sorts, along with being a trained therapist. Because lots of things can contribute to MDD, including a history of drug and alcohol abuse, prior sexual abuse, lack of enough sunlight, just to name a few. These are important skills to have in order to accurately identify the cause of the depression and be able to put together the best treatment program.

Chuck’s incredible survival of a suicide attempt when he was just sixteen years young inspired him to write a book to help others.
