One of the biggest emotional problems that almost a lot of people experience is actually depression. There are many reasons and causes of depression. Some of those basic reasons are a chemical imbalance in your physical body. While others are surely triggered by some other issues. One of those issues we are going to look at is family issues.

Family issues are a very traumatic problem when they occur. This is mostly due to the very fact that family indeed is such an intimate if not the closest part of our lives. So when a problem within the family occurs it makes sense that it can cause problems like depression. This is one of the biggest reasons clients come see my in my depression counseling service. Because it is very essential to address any family problems the soonest possible time.

Depending on what the family problem is will eventually determine the correct course of action that is needed to fix the depression. For example, counseling is a great and perfect way to try and resolve the depression if it is caused by a marital problem. When I get families with relationship problems in my family counselor practice I always try to get them into a regular counseling session. It is within these sessions that we can address the depression aspect of it.

Now if the problem gets worse and the fighting starts to escalate where the marriage is now in trouble, then definitely serious counseling is highly needed. As a couples therapy practice what I try to do is try to have sessions with them. These sessions are purposefully designed to get to the root of the problem.

The main goal is basically to find out what is key factor causing the issues then dealing directly with it. Because a lot of times the root among the many issues are not fully understood. Well a good counseling session can help resolve this.

So as mentioned depression is a very powerful emotion strong enough that can be very harmful. And as mentioned in cases of family problems causing them, there are solutions.

Learning to deal with anger will require a person you can trust like our anger management San Diego counseling. Help for all your relationship problems can be found with family therapist San Diego.

Dysthymic Disorder is similar to ‘normal’ depression. The main difference is that it’s not as severe. One big difference is that this condition lasts over two years before it’s diagnosed. Low energy levels and changes in sleeping habits are also symptoms. Another is a victim’s general feelings of low self-worth.

These four categories of symptoms are also associated with the disease:

1) Changes in the way people think – Difficulty in focusing on something for long and making decisions. This goes with their tendency to also have short term memory loss.

2) Emotional changes – Many people report feeling depressed about things that they used to love. Once even-tempered persons now become short-tempered and irritable. Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness dominate their emotional being.

3) Turn into a hermit of sorts – Become anti-social, avoiding people that they used to talk with frequently. They may stay indoors and overeat or may not eat enough. Besides losing their sex drive, many people slowly stop taking care of their personal hygiene.

4) Physical changes – Despite spending more hours sleeping, people will be constantly run-down and tired. Most can’t fall asleep and if they do, can’t sleep soundly. Laying awake for hours, when they do fall asleep they’ll wake up throughout the night. A minority of dysthymic disorder afflicted people will sleep many hours – apparently soundly – only to awaken feeling more tired than when they went to sleep.

How To Treat Dysthymic Disorder

It turns out that treatment with standard anti-depression methods work very well for this disease, which should come as no surprise since it IS a form of depression. But most people improve with a combination of psychiatric counseling and prescription medications, which parallels traditional depression treatment methods.

Personality disorders like this are best treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is recognized by the medical societies. CBT is becoming the psychiatric treatment of choice. Since people tend to over-react to problems in their lives, cognitive behavior therapy helps them separate which problems are truly big and which are inconsequential. Problems will definitely come up in everyone’s life; CBT allows a person to recognize if the problem is worth his concern or not.

And lastly, therapy is needed to address the high-stress parts of a person’s life that are contributing to his or her depression. Interpersonal relationship conflicts are treated with interpersonal therapy, while the behavioral therapy addresses a person’s ability to cope with life’s stresses.

With the ups and downs of life (not to mention the holidays!) come lots of emotions. One of them can be times of sadness which is perfectly normal, but when does sadness fall into depression?

Do you feel like you are depressed or are your friends saying you might be depressed? If so, you are not alone. Depression is a common problem but there is also a lot more help with depression than you may realize.

To begin, what is depression and how do you know if you have it? It is hard to say since it affects everyone differently. There are some basic similarities though. It can come on subtly or with an overwhelming trauma. It can even come on with a memory.

Since depression can come on slow, it can go by hidden to the one experiencing it. Due to the fact it is a slow evolution, some people may notice even though you may not. It is like a child who appears to be growing rapidly. Relatives who have not seen the child notice the growth immediately while the parents don’t see it as clearly. Because you see your depression everyday, it may be hard to believe you have it.

It can start with some anxiety, fear, hurt, or sadness and then move to seasons of sadness or “blue” feelings. Then it often gradually becomes real depression and can develop into severe major depression. Before you know it you’re not sleeping well, your eating habits are changing, you feel numb, you are gaining or losing weight, you are having trouble concentrating, you are avoiding certain people or events, and beginning to isolate yourself.

Simple tasks become hard to do. Like, opening the mail, bill paying, or answering the phone. Here are some signs of depression that you may recognize.

First, what does depression feel like? It is hard to pinpoint the feelings of depression because many people experience it differently. Some basic similarities are: 1. You are experiencing feelings of consistent irritability, sadness or anger. 2. Nothing seems interesting or fun anymore. 3. You feel bad about yourself feeling worthless, guilty and “wrong” or you don’t fit in. 4. Your sleeping habits are all messed up. You sleep too much or not enough. 5. You have a lot of unexplained headaches or other physical problems. 6. You cry easily. 7. Your weight is different. You are either losing or gaining without any effort. 8. Your concentration is poor and your work habits are poor. 9. You are helpless and hopeless and your general outlook on life is negative. 10. You may be thinking about death or suicide or some way to escape. Second, if you have thoughts of suicide or have a tendency to want to escape, what do you do with those thoughts and what answers are there if you are feeling them? Sometimes these thoughts can be scary and overwhelming. If you feel you are thinking in this way, and do not see any solutions you should get help right away. When in this state of emotions it is hard to talk to others, but it is well worth it to reach out to a pastor or counselor in your area to talk through your thoughts and feelings and to get a professional, objective opinion and help!

When you talk to someone that is sworn to silence it can help make you feel better and relieve the tension that comes with the depression. Even though it seems there are no answers, there are.

Start a journal. This is free and it has proven to be a great success. If you write your thought without holding anything back, you will be able to relieve a lot of those thoughts that seem to trap you. If you are afraid someone will read the journal, keep it in a safe place or throw away the writing after it is written. It is still beneficial to get your thoughts out on paper. What a lot of people who have experienced signs of depression say that it helped them see how their thoughts were and helped get them back on track. It helped them also love themselves again for who they were.

Many will write down one issue that is bothering them and then taking that one issue and breaking it down into four categories.

To start, for example, describe the problem. I am angry with my husband because he is late for dinner.

Second, write about your thoughts of what happened. For example, “if he loved me he would not have been late.”

Third, write down what emotions you are feeling from this situation: fear, hurt, sadness, lonely, guilt, shame, etc. Or maybe it is easier to identify with one of the following messages: “I feel inadequate, unloved, unappreciated, like I don’t matter, I am defective, unlovable, worthless, embarrassed,” etc.

Finally, explain on paper the path you are choosing to act out. For example, I am choosing to isolate myself because it makes me feel better about myself. The honesty in which you do this will unveil a heart you can view and start to heal.

Those that chose the path to end their lives yet failed were sharing how they became hopeful only after their thoughts were shared and they grew to understand the depression. They realized their feelings were temporary and easier to deal with.

You have heard that time heals, but time only heals if you are healing. If you are not healing, time just petrifies and hardens hearts and makes us self-defensive and over protective. Take a step and begin healing today and get ready for a happier and healthier life!

PS. If your depression has gotten to the point where you are having thoughts of ending your life, please call 911 and get some help immediately. Or call a counselor, who will know how to help.

One client joked to me. “I do not remember whether I have a migraine headache because of depression or I was depressed about my migraine headache”

It doesn’t matter if it is a joke or not. Depression and headaches are always interlinked .

At first blush, one tends to reason, “Of course she’s depressed – she’s in pain!” This, however, is not the only reason.

Chronic depression is nothing but depression lasting more than six months and it is not because of any depressive episodes like death of loved ones etc. A recent study has suggested that 67% of people who suffers from migraine headache also suffer from chronic depression.

This number is too high to be ignored. Keep in mind that this study was evaluating chronic depression, not migraine headache.

Another research shows that 40% of people who suffer from chronic depression also suffer from chronic pain like back pain or head ache. Does that mean depression causes migraines?

A person who experienced pain with depression did suffer from depression for six months on an average than with those people who did not suffer from depression. This is found through a study

But other experts do believe that many people report tension headache symptoms but this is actually the symptoms of depression. This is 4 times higher in women than men.

While it’s not clear whether depression causes headaches or headaches might cause depression, it is believed that they may both share the same biology.

In fact, research showed that treating one condition with medication for the other did show some promise. Evidence suggests that both conditions involve serotonin receptors and transporters.

Here is where Soapbox and preach are used. Mostly medications used for headache and migraine can be trial and error method. So one should be careful about the treatment.

Even FDA has warned about combining certain migraine medicines and antidepressants. Medications for migraine can cause life-threatening condition known as serotonin syndrome.

When you suffer from chronic headache or depression don’t be afraid to ask for natural treatment. I do also suggest to speak to a professional about your symptoms.

If highly recommend you to use my migrai9ne and headache program. The natural exercises in the program are very effective and with proven results. This is if you suffer from migraine headaches.

Anxiety attack that occurs during the night can be a symptom of a panic disorder that eventually leads to a person dreading sleep since the person would start worrying that he or she will not be able to sleep soundly. This is very distressing. Experts would say that this attack is usually due to mental worry and corporeal uneasiness.

But what causes nocturnal fright attacks, why do some people experience this and others don’t. Nocturnal fright attacks actually 10.2 percent of the total anxiety attacks that a person might feel. And this is also more frightening as this can lead to other serious health problems like heart attacks, stroke, and even other irrational cause of death.

Night attacks are not similar to nightmares. When you have a nightmare, you can usually recall what the nightmare is about. Unlike anxiety attacks wherein you don’t even know why you’re having one. And attacks also happen during the early phase of sleep and not during the dream phase or REM phase. Though it is not clear what causes night fright attacks, but experts are speculating that this might be due to increase carbon dioxide concentration, changes in parasympathatonic system from an autonomic dysfunction, stresses during the day, alcohol or drugs, or worries and fear of the patient.

So how can people overcome nocturnal attacks? One way of overcoming nocturnal anxiety attacks is through exercise. Exercising and taking a 15 minutes shower at night can help relax and calm your mind. Also, it would be best if you don’t watch television before you go to sleep as this can strain the eye and brain resulting to attacks. Read a calming novel or book instead or listen to a relaxing music before you sleep.

Panic attacks are due to worrying or stress so find ways to stop worrying. Try to stop being afraid of going to sleep and most importantly don’t think about having an attack. Worrying can strain your mind and increases the risk of getting an attack. It would be beneficial to you if you can lower your anxiety levels.

One way of lowering anxiety levels is through positive thinking. Night fright attacks can actually give you more negative thoughts so overcome those thoughts by thinking about positive things as negative thoughts will only result to you fearing sleep. Thinking positively can also help you relax and calm your mind.

Also, experts would recommend that you don’t get out of bed when you get night anxiety attacks. When you go out of bed, you actually get more stressed, which means increasing your panic attack. So stay in bed and find ways to calm your mind. You can chant a mantra or you can also try to write down your thoughts during an attack. Writing not only relieves you of stress, this will also help you analyze the causes behind your attacks.

Caffeine, nicotine or wine in the evening will not help your problem either. These can actually make your attacks worse as nicotine, caffeine can actually give you insomnia, thus you can’t sleep.

And bear in mind that getting angry or frustrated about your situation will not help you overcome the attacks but actually increases. You can lower the attacks by understanding the causes of the attacks.

Are you tired of the sweating, chilling, and rapid heartbeat while driving? Are you tired of the way panic attack hinders your life? Don’t be. The mind is a very powerful tool and it can conquer anything. However, it is complex to understand and it may cause imaginary fear and pain. Since it is part of you, you can program it to stop feeling afraid without medication if you chose to.

Panic attack is described as a condition of having a sudden blow of compelling fear. It usually comes without any warning and without any clear reason. Compared to anxiety attack or the unpleasant feeling that is normally connected with restlessness, fright, or be troubled, panic attack is far more potent.

Your fear of panic attack might have originated from the idea that it can attack any minute and anywhere, inside your house, car and office. Fortunately, you will notice if it is coming to make you suffer. The sweating and chills are all part of it. Just like you had seen in a horror movie, people will feel someone is coming close to get them. Your anxiety level will accelerate and then panic attack hits. From this statement, you understand that you can stop it before it attacks.

Like the birds listening to the whisper of the wind, listen to the cries of your body. Notice the changes you are having. If you feel the tension is building up, decelerate your car and stop to the closest pit stop. Slowly feel the air on your face and breathe. Take in as much fresh oxygen as you can and take your time. Don’t be in a hurry. It is better safe than sorry.

Aside from deep breathing, tell your mind that everything would be okay. There is nothing to worry about and you are safe. Positive affirmations help a lot. It will lessen your anxiety level and help you cope up from your condition. Like what some people say, positive minds open safer and clearer roads.

Distraction will keep you occupied if you have difficulty convincing yourself. Listen to two people talking in the radio and then find ways to relate with them. This way you will get too distracted to think about your situation. You can also talk to your friends or family using an earphone. Lastly, you can use a professional CD to encourage you.

When depression settles in, you can take an active role in banishing it. A few easy steps can help you know how to beat depression fast.

Chemical warfare: An imbalance in brain chemicals is one factor that causes of depression. There are many things that you can do to bring the levels of neurochemicals back into line, but the quickest is exercise. Exercise releases endorphins and endorphins help lift mood. Endorphins also help regulate mood, so fighting back with these is like waging a chemical war on a low mood. Any amount of exercise releases these endorphins, so if the thought of a prolonged session does not seem manageable, do something else. Even a short walk will get you moving enough to release those endorphins.

Diet: The interaction of chemicals within the body is complex and many factors affect mood. Vitamin deficiencies can trigger depression. Lack of B vitamins can be remedied by eating nuts. Sleep disturbances add to the stress hormones in the body that also contribute to suppressed mood. Caffeine can disrupt natural sleep patterns, So avoiding it is a must. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels have negative impact on mood. Eating regularly and staying away from sugary foods and treats will help stabilize levels.

Psychological operations: Depression is a physical illness. Like other medical conditions such heart disease or diabetes, your state-of-mind does influence your recovery. In depression, making the decision to fight the low mood has value and can influence the length of illness. No one can cure your depression. You must take an active role in getting better.

Refuse to Withdraw: Medical research has shown that social interaction is a factor that affects severity of depression. Having the support of friends and families reduces the length and severity of depressive episodes. Having contact with people may not stop depression, but it will help. Even joining a group like a book discussion group is helpful.

Have A Good Cry. Exhibiting a range of emotions is actually a sign of mental health. Crying is one end of that spectrum. So, go ahead and cry. Let the bottled up emotions come out and make way for other emotions too.

Take an active role in getting better. Also recognize that sometimes depression is a serious medical malady that needs professional help. See a doctor if depressed moods persist or interfere with your daily activities.

Instead, stop these negative thoughts by doing a pattern interrupt. Shout “STOP” in your head, or even aloud if possible. This breaks the negative loop cycle and is capable of stopping your panic attack almost instantly.

3) Empower yourself You can empower yourself by saying things that has a positive impact instead of negative impact.
Panic attacks usually occur suddenly when you don't expect them. During such times, you will be ill-prepared to handle them.

Panic attacks usually occur suddenly when you don’t expect them. During such times, you will be ill-prepared to handle them.

You might be having fun with your friends or doing some other work. All of a sudden, you get a panic attack.

This might cause you to become fearful of engaging in the activity which you were doing at the time of the attack.

Good news for you is that, the even, place or activity may not have anything to do with the happening of panic attack.

So you don’t have to avoid those places and situations. You can continue to live life as usual.

It might seem difficult at first, but when you learn not to let panic disorder affect your life, it will lose its power. This problem will then stop haunting you.

The initial courage may be the difficult to muster up. For this reason, do not try to take big steps to tackle your problem.

Take small mini-steps in order to tackle and overcome panic attacks. If you are afraid of going shopping, then don’t go alone. Take a friend with you who is fully aware of your problem.

If you are taking any pills for this problem, keep them handy with you. This way, you will feel a little more comfortable to go to those places which you presently dread.

Just don’t try to go alone. Trying to become too brave all of a sudden may backfire at you. Be patient, and try to take little courageous steps in the right direction.

Keep reminding yourself whenever you can that panic attacks are not dangerous. You get a feeling as if you are about to have a heart attack. But that is just a feeling – you are not having a real heart attack.

I haven’t come across reports of people dying from panic attacks. So, it is safe to assume that they are not dangerous. We only perceive them to be.

You will feel a little safer in this knowledge. You will now know that even if another attack happens, it will soon end up and you probably won’t be hurt in the process.

Likewise, take baby steps in the positive direction which help in raising your courage. Everyday, try to move in the positive direction in order to overcome panic attacks.

After some time, you may no longer fear panic attacks. At this point, they may fade away on their own!

Keep in mind, to avoid taking pills as much as possible. Take them when absolutely necessary and only after consultation with the doctor.

Better to go for natural treatments or behavioral therapy to learn how to tackle this problem without pills. This is a better strategy in the long run.
